Why Azealia Banks' Attack on Skai Jackson is So Much of the Problem

The internet feud between 24 year-old rapper Azealia Banks and 14 year-old Disney star Skai Jackson began yesterday evening after Banks went on rant about the former One Direction star Zayn Malik. Banks sent out a series of racist tweets after receiving backlash from Zayn's fans for her harsh criticism of him. Banks even went as far as to accuse Zayn of stealing ideas from her past visuals for his latest music videos.

and if you think it ended there, then you obviously don't know Azealia Banks.

Skai Jackson soon became the next victim in another one of Banks' infamous Twitter tirades. Jackson, who is a big fan of Zayn's, jokingly tweeted that Banks needed to "simmer down a little".

Banks responded with a fiery " and you need to grow some hips and start your menses!"

and this was just the beginning.

Banks went on to recommend that Jackson "get her a** and t*tties" done in order to become the "Instagram thot that her mother is prepping her to be".

She even went on to insist that Jackson's mother perform sexual acts to further progress Jackson's career.

Azealia Banks, you have truly outdone yourself.

It's baffling how the same person who has always spoken out about the abuse and ridicule of black women has gone out of her way to drag both a black girl and her black mother in such a way. These insults contradict every statement she's ever made in the defense of a black woman.

How dare she body shame a child whose body is still growing and changing. How dare she recommend that a black girl, just the way she is, is somehow lacking in any way. How dare she add to "You Are Not Enough" narrative that many of us black girls and women have faced all of our lives.

For a black women to recommended that a black girl "get work done" in order to be successful only adds to the constant sexualization of black women and the idea that that's all we're good for.

But we are worth so much more. And the fact that Jackson clapped back with nothing but class proves that we know we are. The fact that the black community now looks upon Azealia Banks with even more disgust than they ever have before proves that we know we are.

Black girls are magic. And our magic can come from our beautifully-built bodies, but it mostly comes from our phenomenal minds.

Women are way too hard on one another, especially black women. It is important that we learn from this type of ignorance and grow from it. It is also important that we take every opportunity we're given to uplift one another. In a society that doesn't love us, it is important that we love each other.
